TL;DR for buyers
“EWG Green” is the cleanest tier of an independent US ingredient-safety database — and Canadian parents now check it before they buy. But “EWG-rated”, “EWG Verified”, and “Green on every ingredient” are three different claims. For your shelf, the strongest signal is a brand that scores Green across its whole lineup, not just one hero product. Stocking one is an easy, defensible clean-beauty story for your staff and shoppers.
A few years ago, “natural” was enough to move a baby product off the shelf. Not anymore. Canadian parents — especially the under-40 cohort — now screenshot ingredient lists and cross-check them against the EWG database before they spend a dollar. If you stock baby skincare, “EWG Green” has quietly become one of the most powerful three-word signals in your category.
This guide explains what EWG Green actually is, how it differs from “natural” and “organic”, why your customers care, and how to use it as a retailer without overstating the claim.
What EWG is — and what it isn’t
EWG stands for the Environmental Working Group, an independent US non-profit. Since 2009 it has run the Skin Deep® database, which scores cosmetic ingredients and products on a 1–10 hazard scale:
green
yellow
red
It is not a government regulator and it is not the same as “organic” or “natural” (which describe sourcing, not hazard). EWG is a hazard-and-transparency rating. For baby skincare — thin skin, daily full-body use — that hazard lens is exactly what an anxious parent is looking for.
The three claims buyers confuse (and you shouldn’t)
This is where a lot of “clean” marketing gets loose. There are three different ways a product can reference EWG:
- “EWG-rated” — the ingredients simply exist in the Skin Deep database, at any score. A product with several yellow ingredients can still say this.
- “EWG Verified™” — a formal program: full ingredient transparency, none of EWG’s “unacceptable” ingredients, good manufacturing practices. Stricter, and relatively rare.
- “EWG Green on every ingredient” — the toughest practical bar: every single ingredient scores 1 or 2. Not a logo program, but the cleanest thing you can verify line by line.
When a distributor tells you a brand is “EWG”, ask which one. The brands worth featuring are the ones that hold Green across the whole formula, not just a single product.
Why Canadian shoppers actually check it
Three shifts have made EWG a purchase trigger in Canada specifically:
- Label literacy. The same parents driving K beauty adoption read INCI lists. EWG is the tool they already use to decode them.
- Distrust of vague claims. “Natural” and “hypoallergenic” are unregulated marketing words. EWG gives shoppers a third-party number instead of a brand’s promise.
- Baby = zero risk tolerance. For a newborn’s daily lotion, parents will pay a premium for the option that scores clean across the board. That willingness to pay is what makes the category worth its shelf space.
Retail takeaway: An EWG Green lineup is a shelf-talker that writes itself and a staff answer to the single most common question in the category — “is this safe for my baby?”
How to verify an EWG claim in 30 seconds
You don’t have to take a label at face value. Before you feature a brand:
- Go to ewg.org/skindeep.
- Search the product, or check individual ingredients from the INCI list.
- A genuinely clean product shows a Green product rating and a 1–2 score on each ingredient.
- If only some ingredients are listed and there’s no product-level rating, the brand has published data but not pursued full verification.
What “Green across the line” looks like in practice
The Korean baby brands that lead on this don’t treat EWG as a sticker on one product — they formulate the whole range to it. Mongdies, the brand we carry under official Canadian distribution, is built this way:
- EWG Green ingredient scores across the core lineup — cleansers, lotions, creams, oils.
- DermaTest Excellent — Germany’s top independent dermatology grade, on top of EWG.
- Vegan-certified and pediatrician-tested, with a 20-free formula (no parabens, sulfates, mineral oil, synthetic fragrance, and more).
For a retailer, that combination means you can make a clean-beauty claim that survives a sceptical, label-reading parent — without overstating anything.

- Shelf-talker: “EWG Green-rated ingredients · DermaTest Excellent · Vegan” — three verifiable facts, no health claims.
- Staff line: “Every ingredient scores in EWG’s cleanest tier — you can check it yourself on their site.”
- Avoid: medical or condition claims. Let the rating and certifications speak; keep wording to “gentle”, “for delicate skin”, “clean”.
